Grant Proposal Information and Guidelines for Faculty

(revised February 2012)

The Seibold Faculty Development Endowment has been established to assist individual members of the faculty in attaining their professional development goals, whether discipline-specific or related to excellence in classroom teaching, and consistent with the mission of Jamestown College.

Grants will be available to complement existing individual institutional funds for faculty development. Approximately $3,600 are available for the 2011-2012 year, of which approximately $1,500 remain for the second funding period. Applications submitted will be reviewed by the six-member review committee, which will make awards. Applications will be judged on their perceived merits to promote the applicant’s professional abilities within his or her discipline or in teaching. Individuals may make repeated applications and receive repeated funding; however, it is intended that meaningful support be given to as many faculty as possible who submit qualified proposals.

Types of Activities Potentially Funded (exemplary rather than exhaustive, not prioritized):

  • Professional conferences, workshops, seminars (presentation or attendance)
  • Faculty research and faculty-student research
  • Advanced degree assistance (e.g., tuition, fees, travel)
  • Materials (e.g., books, software, equipment, expendables) directly related to the activities  listed above
  • Other

Evaluation Criteria:
Strict numerical guidelines of evaluation do not exist. Evaluation of proposals will be based on the Committee’s perception of the value of the experience to the individual and to the institution, other funding sources available and utilized, and the number and quality of competing proposals. It is important that the applicant make a lucid, strong rationale for the value of the experience. In general, experiences demonstrating higher professional quality involving more prominent venues will be preferred.

Funding is intended for future activities as opposed to reimbursement for past experiences; however, retroactive funding may be considered, depending on timing of opportunities and review dates. Activities funded should be completed prior to the start of the next academic year. Proposals may be funded totally or in part.

Official Application Forms: Application forms are available from the chair of the Seibold Committee. In addition, you can click here to download a copy of the application. Applications and subsequent correspondence must be submitted to the chair of the committee in both hard copy (signed) and electronically.

There will be two funding periods per academic year. The deadlines for receipt of applications are November 1, 2011 and April 2, 2012. Activities for applications accepted by the November 1, 2010 deadline should be completed by June 30, 2012; activities for applications accepted by the April 1, 2012 deadline should be completed by December 31, 2012. The committee will review applications within one week of deadlines.
